In fact, the home school connection affects the academic performance of a child and a good balance between the two is vital to their success. Making Your Home Education Encouraging
Everything begins at home. What your children are taught within the walls of your house will stay with them long after their traditional schooling ends. A school aged child spends the majority of their day at school, being influenced – both educationally and socially – by their teachers and peers. What can you do to make the most of their time at home? Below are a few ideas!
Socialize as a family – if your family does not spend time together your child’s social skills will suffer. You want them to develop healthy socializing skills and you can assist in that by teaching them manners, appropriate behavior and speech, and interacting often in a fun way as a family.
Set aside time for learning – your child needs to know that learning does not stop when they enter the doors of your home after a long school day. Learning began at home and it should continue there, even after they have entered traditional schooling. This is a major part of the home school connection.
Develop a routine for when your child starts and ends their day. Be sure that they have enough rest by getting to bed and waking up at the same times each night and day. Make time for a sit down breakfast before they leave for school, this is a benefit to their brains and growing bodies. Ask about what they learned at school that particular day and what homework was brought home to expand on the subject. Discuss that which they understand and that which they do not. Have them begin working on their homework at a particular time after school each day, preferably while they are still in “school mode” and not too relaxed or beginning other activities.
Ensure that your child has a quiet area to study, and for younger children sit down and study with them. Always check to be sure homework is completed and understood before going on to other activities.
Staying Connected With Your Child’s School
A good relationship with your child’s school is extremely beneficial. Some wonderful ways to stay connected are:
– Helping your child complete homework, reports and projects
– Offering to chaperone field trips or help with events
– Becoming a member of the Parent Teacher Association
– Attending parent-teacher nights/open houses to hear how your child is doing from their educators
– Expressing concerns to teachers or other faculty members when necessary to ensure your child does not fall behind

If you are home schooling you will obviously have more control over the state of both your child’s learning and home environment. The home school connection doesn’t get any closer than it does with homeschooling. Remember to keep a good schedule so schooling gets done and fun and family times are not sacrificed!
