Let’s Play – KSP 0.90.0 Hard Career Ep27 – Day to Day Business
Hey everybody welcome back to the space agency I’m wandering kid so at the end of the last episode we wrap it some trouble getting Jeff and Bill up into space together now at this point I’ve opened up yet a few more toys for example I’ve opened up generators so I’m no longer reliant on solar panels I don’t want and I’ve also opened up the 25 by 4 Kevin pillar piloting and as you can see I’ve still got some funds I’m trying to do is I’m trying to open up the parts while I do missions and then I’ll build out the station’s once I’ve got enough opened up so that you can launch or three is ready for service I think let’s see if we can put this in space and let’s see if this works sun’s about to set let’s turn on ambient so you guys can see well I don’t quite have the bill to be to hit orbit part of that’s because I only hit a twr or 1.47 at liftoff that’s okay I’m going to do now let’s see what we can do about moving our apoapsis so now we’re going to decouple this control from here spend ourselves over about half an hour engine which are csworks was okay to that engine oh right I gotta turn the fuel on nice try to pick up the periapsis from this point it’s just to go radio there all right so now we’re verbal decent amount of delta-v left wrong start moon all right so wonderful we’ll take that that burn is in 19 minutes so we’ll check in on these guys again after they get near so while we’re working on other things it just when you let you guys know I haven’t completely forgotten the jejunum mission this is the Ares sword which is going to be our primary drum ship inside these cargo bays on the side are the mushroom drums that I showed off in a much earlier episode they’re basically just drones to go find out altitudes on guna for safe LZs or anything else attached up here we have two of the area’s hawks this little point here is where I’m going to eventually build.
And attach a small tug to be able to drag these things around it’s not going to be an impressive tug it’s just going to be functional down here is a docking port to allow our refueling to hook up and refuel the system I stuck a Coppola on top just well because but it’s not like it’s going to hold many people but it’s kind of a just in case I end up with a Kerbal near it they need somewhere safe to go hide other than that this ship is meant to be fully automated three large reaction wheels two generators rechargeable battery bank and a remote guidance unit I’m hoping to be able to launch this thing as one piece the problem is right now as you can see my parts are at 295 of 255 I need to upgrade the VAB to even roll this out to the launch pad but other than that I think it’s reasonable to try and launch this thing it is 176 tons I mean I’m not saying it’s small but I think with the tier 3 gear and the heavier engines and things like that I think we can put this up in one shot it’s mostly complete one of the things you may notice a lack of is satellites I did have an idea for satellites for sub assemblies this is basically some towable bare-bones satellites to leave an around and I decided not to because the Hawks can actually fulfill satellite requirements and then be returned so I’m gonna view some of the satellite mechanics oh it may not be the best of plants but it’s what I’m gonna do now this is gonna go up last minute and the reason for that is because just before we leave I want to collect up a bunch of Doudna satellite missions.
And if these have to be built after the satellite mission is accepted so I’m hoping to get there with say six or seven satellite missions that I can just bang out real fast on arrival and go from there my goodness bill is as happy as Jeb pulling into we’re about ready to do our motor orbital insertion burn and shortly here we’ll be landing Jeb and Bill somewhere on moon so bill and Jeb are about to start their great adventure should have made this thing into a phone booth Bill’s not too sure about this anymore it’s a lot of fun while he was flying but now that we’re landing in Jeb’s at the pilot rills he’s not sure he’s remembering all those test flights that they did just before they took off Jeb calls him test flights he’ll call some failures looks like I’m gonna come down in the crater here I’m coming down on something 15 28 degrees it’s gonna watch our suicide burn but those curious the suicide burn does not take into account horizontal speed my bad that was pointed out to me and had to do some testing to convert me hey they made it down what do you know not the greatest of landing zones but they’re here let’s get our ladders out bill welcome to the moment Bill’s not as adventurous as Jeb sir he’s gonna come down the ladder we finally got here I’m so happy oops and Bill’s having a good laugh at Jeb I look at a Tory postcard shot Jeb and German bill two buddies made it to the moon now bill and Jeb are off two minutes I’m gonna see if I can’t pull off a stunt when I do this rather than waiting the obligatory 20 or 30 days for the transfer to Mendez I’m going to try and they would die down the curve and head back up two minutes so Jeb and Bill are debating on their next adventure first thing I need to do though is get into orbit you all right more orbital at moon at about 14k now let’s see if I can figure out how to pull this off so the trick is now once you dive into minimus or dive in a curve pick up enough speed.
And then come out two minutes hopefully while I’m down there curving I can get my orbit straight now at some point so if I’ve done this set up right a lead moon I’ll hit my periapsis at about four hours and then as we come around curving right it’s a relatively high periapsis that’s okay well come up here and we’ll have a minimus encounter we take a look at memnos we can do late adjustments on this it’s a little high and whatnot but we can adjust in flight level over here and this is a 11 day let’s see I reach amendments in 10 days instead of the usual 20 to 25 that it takes doing a normal transfer I’ll take it it’s an odd way to do it but I’ll do it so due to the nature of this burn and how difficult it’s actually going to be I’m going to actually run the old maneuver node I’m going to come out here to the math to watch the burn firing at 13 seconds out and we’ll see if I can hit this right all right I think that’s got us where we need to be we should have our intercept I’m going to put a maneuver node out there for Corrections and it’s not going to do anything I’m just gonna put the note out there for the moment there we go just so I can add in an alarm so that I don’t forget to do what I need to do now it’s not the most efficient delta-v wise to do it this way but it’s much better on time and while Jeb and Bill are on their wild adventure here we had the sky popper a little SSTO that doesn’t function as well as I’d hoped coming in near the Ares home for a pickup on harken after already picking up Billy Bob Lee Kerman who had a name that I just couldn’t resist so I actually went up.
And rescued him and that’s reasonably close this has no docking ports or anything like that so we’re gonna have to manually transfer harken over but this will get us hearkened down to KSP so that we can get him his XP when the air is ham on this float which will be repopulated with curtains there we go let’s switch over let’s pop out harken the spades popper is basically a taxicab Junior it’s only got room for two crew in it just enough fuel for rocket flight and engine flight cut blue inks and some landing gear and some intakes if it performed better I would have showed you guys the build process and whatnot I threw it away mostly because well this thing needs to dip into the atmosphere and then climb again so far with the flight profile I’ve got for it I can take it apart later if you guys really care but in general it’s just functional have a real hard time grabbing a ladder for this door all right so let’s get Billy Bob Lee and harken home so we’re coming in on final approach nice glide path we should be good for landing some very minor adjustments with my yawn a final approach here one more down well lands well enough when I had my eight fingers on the right keys very nice so harken got himself up to level two that’s definitely a bonus and Billy Bob um we’ve is a scientist himself at the level one so this is the area stocked for guys not much changed on it just a little bit of rebalancing for center of mass and center lift I pushed the tanks here forward so that that center of mass won’t move as the tanks drain and I’m going to set our lift forward just so it’s not horribly in the back and I’ve got some into virility don’t want to see if I can’t get this to space doing a different pattern which is a very slow burn on the thrusters and trying to let lift do the majority of the work kind of what you do with big old clunky heavy craft so with them set to you 15 and see what we can do here liftoff is occur and keep our nose pitched up at around 10 and let’s see what happens I’m losing speed here I’m not liking that let’s give it a little more there we go all right let’s see how this goes thinking we’re gonna need more speed let’s crank this up all right so this pattern isn’t working let’s see what happens if I get myself up to a decent atmospheric efficiency and then start arguing so I need to say add half throttle to counter to drag which is certainly gonna burn off my mana prop far too quickly yeah I’m not sure I’m liking this we’re gonna return this for the cash so check out Michael if you guys can figure out how to make this thing go to orbit on its own I’ll be very curious but you know I don’t have the skills or I don’t understand the technique so I want to show you guys something that I’ve been using off on my other screen just to try and keep track of what I’m doing on different locations and basically I’ve got a little cheat sheet but I keep going on me other screen and notepad plus plus and I use this to keep track of what I got to do what you cite the reason for this is because I hate using the contract window inside the game it’s a pain to scroll it lags my system out when it tries to load it’s just generally annoying.
And it’d be really nice if when you highlighted one of the nodes if we tell you what it was for or you know above whatever or below whatever but you don’t get that and this is just a quick cheat sheet for me to use so I can see what’s going on every now and then I have to come back into here and refill up the sheet so I have myself straightened out and figured out what’s going on that district I’d like you know so do you guys remember I have been launching suicide stations in the background this is a five man station that I was using for moon and solar orbit however Bob snuck on when I wasn’t looking so I wasn’t able to take this out of orbit but I need to go get him down now to do that I’ve also got a number of different things going on all over the place in particular I want to go put polar satellites up in high and low orbit unloaded minutes so I figured I’d make a virtue of requirement and go deal with that now as soon as you can see you over here on the Left I got a lot of things going on all over the place and this is where Kerbal alarm clock really can help you out and trying to keep track of everything you’re doing if you guys remember from an earlier episode when they recommended if you guys pick it up or at least why I do so down on the ground but down here I’ve assembled a neat little dreamcatcher and inside here decided to play with some cargo bays and hiding them there are a series of 1500 Delta V satellites hook to the bottom with regular tangent points and they have little injectors the TR to the static covers and these guys whoops like this there we go so little two-man concrete in the front will pick up Bob and bring them home and what if these satellites deployed while I’m up there the plane itself comes in at fifteen point two tons I’m pushing this turbojet just to the edge of what it can handle and I’m using the new shotgun intakes to try and help out with air flow than that pretty much a standard SSTO that I built mass and lift worked like this and the reason for that is because I expect worst-case scenario to look like this on the plane or when I’m coming in for landing get that back up there now let’s suppose that you put a pilot in here action groups my abort group is handling my engines in intake on them all Johnson you don’t get to come along rich bulls will be flying let’s go to space all right we’re looking okay make sure that I’m not I have Lee set up on my staging okay we’re good let’s see how this one goes so one of the reasons I’m bringing these satellites up two pullers orbit on both moon and minimus to help save my Lander is a bunch of Delta V but they keep having to eat up when they pop up go to the next place and get high low and come back by putting them in polar orbit on the dawn dusk line hopefully they’ll be able to pick up the majority of my temperature.
And grab them grab yoli scans in orbit and I can save a bunch of Delta V on my Landers and a bunch of work for having to deal with them now the Landers are still me necessary for very low below contracts like below 6,200 on mid meds for example that’s something that a lander will still have to go and take care of but do you settle it should be able to handle the majority of the work I need them to do I am a little concerned about this plane if you’ll notice on the nav ball I’m the program marker as nowheres near my target which means I probably don’t have enough lift on this plane but we’re gonna give it a go anyway okay I’m not feeling the love on this plane I don’t like my program marker I don’t think I have enough lift we’re gonna bring this back in for landing before I get too high and I get out of control sorry I moved the camera a lot around during my last landing approach here I know it gets a little wonky when I’ve got time sped up but what kind of necessary to keep myself from making significant errors now one of the things I do tend to do is use the latitude here to line up on three degrees which tends to help okay come on turn on brakes no no no no no okay let’s kill the engine a bit yeah that was a very hot landing but that’s okay when you don’t have a lot of lift you do need to come in a bit fast keep your lift up so yeah I’m thinking I’m short by like two or four units of lift which I would kind of surprises me this Delta wings worth – this ones are – this one’s worth – this one’s worth once that’s seven by fourteen a 15-ton crap so yeah I’m a little low I wasn’t expecting it to be that bad all right so we’re gonna go deal with that so we’ve got our pulley set to play – sto here I have a structural wing type a over there.
And that come on thank you as a lip reading of one so alright so we need a little more lift on this I’d hope the point seven up here on the advanced canard speech is going to be able to carry them apparently not mmm how do I want to adjust this so you know I’m not all that confident about doing this way because this makes these elephants much less useful to get some mental wingnuts in front of them and what happens is as you angle your angle your crapped up these become useless because of the length of wing that’s going to block the airflow that goes across them however all right so that’s two four six seven if I add in and parole you always want your most inside elements to be hand on the wall you don’t need a lot of help for role and especially the deccan ARDS up in the front so that’s two four six seven eight sixteen yeah roughly seventeen point five units a lit for a fifteen point one turner now that should help out like staple these wings together now I’ll let you keep it from flopping around a bit and let’s see if that works a little better all right we have liftoff there that’s looking a lot better I’m right at the top of my pro-grade marker I think this is gonna be a lot more successful let’s go to space so we’ve come up we’re approaching 15k which is about when we’re gonna start modifying things I’m down at about 35 degrees at this point I’ll be coming down 30 at about 15 now one of the things you guys should remember about cargo ships is they do have a slightly different flight profile well mostly because the center of mass is gonna ship so desperately when you come in that you have to build a little differently or at least they do for me as you can see I’m fighting for altitude are fighting for pitch at this point canards alone upfront just aren’t doing it up not for the SAS the other difference for cargo ships is your thrust to weight off of your turbo jet doesn’t usually carry as much thrust as you would normally have when you’re not dealing with the cargo now can I build orange tank planes not really you’ve seen my adventures with that but I’m used to low-end cargo jets trying to get my vertical speed to be above 100 it’s across a 24k plane.
And you want to be below 100 when you cross 32 now you notice here I’m having some problems of not keeping enough vertical speed as I’m approaching 32k well I want to be below 100 I don’t want to be that dang well or that dropping that fast so I’m gonna up my angle here a bit well we still continue to gain speed back up to 30 for a little bit I personally usually aim to keep my vertical around 40 sometimes it works as planned this is primarily being caused by the fact that I don’t have enough thrust to weight that I’m low cuz I took off at point 7 so that’s the primary reason I’m fighting with this at this point all I’m trying to do is just gain some speed as we go up long as I’m gaining speed horizontal I’m not worried and as long as I ended so cutout now is my speed increases I eventually hit a point where I don’t have to angle up quite so much to be able to hold it as you can see I’m holding it around 25 now and I’m able to maintain my 3839 I just have to bounce up the 30 degrees every now and then I’m gonna continue this pattern until I get to about 1900 m/s I figured first engine cut out has occurred cutting to 5/6 part of the reason I have an ending cut up this early is because I’m so far off the air string luckily I had the shock when you call these I have the shock comes on so they’re getting a lot of intake now if I bring myself down to 15 or so I should pick back up there we go bringing down a 2/3 hey now we go for speed you notice my vertical speed is dropping I’m probably going to lose a little vertical as I go here you I’m starting to drop a little too much for my comfort even though I’m gaining speed.
And gaining it slowly I’d hope to be above 2 K at this point this jet needs a little more thrust to wait on the jet engines I am pushing a limit of where you can go with the turbojet which is about 15 tons at most you see if I can’t get some of this vertical back there we go now that I’ve gotten to a speed that I can really work with I’m able to pull my vertical back up some we dropped a little bit back down so that actually helps maintain our airflow into the shock tracking intakes now I’m sure there is better approaches but this is the one I usually end up on now go notice I’m gaining speed gaining vertical speed even at ten degrees even though earlier I had to hold it up at 2530 this is because speed by looked this will get corrected when Harvester changes the lift to velocity concerns and we end up with velocity squared now I’m just gonna kind of sit here at five degrees as long as I’m gaining speed I don’t mind my periapsis went to just one pile did it for me that’s always nice once that happens I’m getting pretty close to orbital speed at some point here my vertical is gonna start running away from me and that’s okay we want that to happen at this point I have enough speed that if I wanted to I could disengage the jet engine and switch over to my rocket boosters push myself up to 70k and be done with this or 75 probably at this point we’re just gonna keep eating up the engines we’re all hanging out at five to zero notice I’m basically going horizontal at this point I want to have rituals hold pro-grade at this point we’re not doing much else other than just kind of cruising on our engines as we carry ourselves up through the thinner atmosphere we’re trying not to lose speed at this point while we get out of finish getting out of Dragon mo we’re approaching 57 K which is about where I expect the engines to finally finish cutting out so at this point we’re going to cut the engines and we will stage to engage out liquid fuel engines we ended up with an apple abscess of ninety point six just shy of 39 so roughly about two-thirds of the circumference over here we’ll add a manoeuvre pick our periapsis up a bit not quite so much there we go that should work that my neighbors gonna cost us forty four point four and delta-v not bad at all now as you can see while I’ve got that assumed up I ain’t losing some of my Apple apses height from the remaining drag of the atmosphere I’m kind of doing a very very low end arrow break alright we are in space.
And let’s shim the first settle it up extenders panels let’s rename him yeah crow birds it’s your engine engage oh yeah why is your engine nothing gauging all right time engage now all right let’s figure out your departure pattern here I don’t want to release all of these satellites at once because I don’t want any accidental collisions so I’ll be sending these off in a staggered set if I come back to here I think I can probably send the moon Lowe in as well but he’s gonna want her to part on pretty much the same pattern and I don’t want to be trying to fight with two ships literally simultaneously to get them out there so we’ll let him float and actually let me just double-check that these guys don’t crash into each other yeah they’re gonna come within 11 years of each other at some point I don’t like that so we’re gonna do I’m gonna take this satellite we’re just gonna get a little bit away now how do we look watch I’ll do the ad okay and I said you must target Oh weird about what I guess there now we stay at least a couple of hundred metres away from each other excellent and I’ll adjust for what we need to adjust later so now if I wanted to I could probably launch the other one drop it down a little lower orbit and they would be offset for speed but yeah I’m not any particular hurry to get these things out of my face but as you can see we’re will be launching me slowly but surely actually I could probably launch them in this one if that one started yeah let’s launch them in this one out I’ll drop him into a slightly lower whole bit Oh fire the next one there so we’ve got two of our satellites ready to go and we’ll watch the other two once we get an orbit in and I’m not so worried about collisions and things of that nature so for those of you curious when I finally have my four satellites in transit.
And this is what it looks like when you have a bunch of platillos in motion I’ve done correction burns for all of them so we’re coming to polar orbit at this point and now we just kind of wait on them now I have to add Vanessa why for the one I just finished up and next up we’re gonna pick a bomb so having picked up Bob rituals is getting ready to set up his landing burn so we’ve deployed our satellites we picked up Bob to bring him down well hook up with the taxi cab or something like that and bring everybody back up later but for the moment we’re just gonna land these guys return our plane and get everyone back to the station this doesn’t have a docking port or anything like that nor does it actually have any kind of probe on it so it’s not like I could detach it or anything like that anyway so I’ll just get these guys landed I may have misjudged the landing pattern I may overshoot KSC we’ll see well since it’s not on I can make sure I know heck quite seemed to aim it onto the runway here want to go come on get over there there we go watch your wheels and we’re down recovered our claim for thirty four point two K that works P for either these guys that’s okay and that will probably take care of this episode of the agency guys as always thanks for watching I’ll see you next time.
