Finding Your Purpose – Career Services
I work for OSU careers services and it’s their job on campus to find jobs for OSU students and we do that through setting up on-campus interviews we run a website for students to get on in search of jobs like monster com that sort of thing and we have a lot of career fairs where students can actually meet with employers on the campus of the website for osu career services is WWI OSU grads calm and it basically runs like any other employment website you get on and you set up a profile for yourself and you upload your resume and then you have free access to all of the employers that we represent and they’re from all over the United States people can just search them apply for what they’re interested in and …
Then a lot of times we have the students come into our office and interview with those employers when they come to visit I’m probably the biggest thing that career service is to help students find the best fit in the real world for their major is just individual counseling it’s very easy to get a student just has to walk in and we have about four permanent staff members four or five that can just sit down with students and go over what they plan to do with their major and then we also have a couple of websites and resources that students can use that can expand maybe their ideas what they could do with our major-specific jobs and testimonies from different people and just lots of different ways to kind of get out of the box with what you’re hoping to do cursors is a good way to make connections for now in the future it’s good to get involved each person or office each college has their own career services and…
That way it’s a good connection within your own college but also from that college there’s a connection to the big career services in the Student Union and that’s helpful as far as any time your freshman if you need help with stuff all the way to in your senior my best advice for any incoming freshmen would be get involved as much as possible it doesn’t matter what you’re in I look back on the last few years I’ve been in school and there’s a lot of things I would more things I wish I would have done but I haven’t regretted any of it but i wish i could have got involved in a few extra things even though my plate was already full but just get involved the more people you meet the better is the more connections you have down the road career services is great at helping students find their purpose we we offer so many different services for the students we help them establish the resume we have so many consultants that are ready and willing you know to help them build from scratch or even just fine to in their resumes I know that when I first started working at career services I didn’t have resume yet and i worked with Missy Dennis and she helped me with my resume and it looks great and…
I’m proud to show it to anyone give any employer I let all my friends know that they should come and you know we have ready references down the hall and there are orange sheets about pretty much every topic you could want to know about so if you know just picking those up helps and we we like to we can teach them how teach students how to maybe dress for an interview or what questions are good to ask and all those things to where you are just a refined student and feel confident in yourself Career Services offers our website it’s higher OC grads calm and at that website you can create an account and once you’ve created that account you can log on and you can actually post your resume and employers can view that resume and the best part about is you can do a search for part-time jobs or full-time jobs or work-study jobs and you know you can narrow it down to something that is in your field or if it’s something general and you can look for jobs and any of our job postings that we have will list a contact name and person and there’s usually an application online or you can contact that person and so it’s really geared you can do it at home or you can come up and we can help you with it I would say to any freshmen coming in too I would say to get to know as many people as you can because you never know you know how they might be able to help you in the future and…
I would also say to start looking for part-time jobs early come up to our office at career services and we will help you out because it’s hard sometimes and but we’re ready and willing to help you whenever you need it
