Okay, are we good first-ever Badass Careers, YouTube video, Hey Badasses, Welcome to Badass Careers, which is a youtube channel dedicated to helping you to design and build your dream career? My name is Rosie. I’m a recruiter.
Hr manager turned career coach and, in this video, I’m going to take you through five key steps that you need to follow to uncover Your career purpose and stick around to the end because I do have a free gift for you, Which I think is Gon na be super useful for you, So definitely don’t wan na miss that So before we get started, I want to ask you a question: What is your purpose? What is your, why have you figured it out yet Because whether we figured it out or not, we each have the potential to uncover our Career purpose or our.
Why we do what we do? We’re tapping into the deepest layers here.
It’s.
A mix of your values, your personality, your strengths, your life experiences – It usually comes together to create this kind of ultimate conviction Or sort of mission that you’re on, like you, ‘re on a quest to do something really worthy.
A career purpose integrates who you are, What you do and the impact that you’d like to make on the world.
If you’re watching this video, Maybe you know the feeling of being a bit lost and confused.
Maybe a bit overwhelmed, Maybe wondering if what you’re currently doing is.
Actually, it right Is that your thing Is that what you were born to do made to do? Are you really fulfilling your potential? Maybe you’re wondering what the f Should.
I will be doing with my career. How can I get more happiness out of my career? What makes me different What’s my greater calling and isn’t there more to work than this hint? Yes, Yes, there is Don’t worry.
We’re gon na find it So the framework I’m gon na take you through in this video is one of my favorites and it’s really good for helping you to find Some clarity and get a greater sense of direction, And in fact, I’ve actually cut a big fan because it’s the framework I used personally to switch from fortune 500 Corporate HR manager to online career, coach and founder of Badass Careers.
But Before we jump in, I just want to clarify.
What do I mean by career purpose, and why is it so so important Well, can you imagine how great life would be if you were spending 40 hours a week doing work, You really loved work that so aligned to your personalities, your values, your strengths.
All of that good stuff, Then it just feels natural, like a natural extension Of who you are as a person.
You feel, like you, ‘re in the right place like you meant to be there and because the work feels so rewarding And it feels so impactful to you.
It actually energizes you rather than drain you and when you know your career purpose or your, why it kind of provides a Filter through which you see the world and you can make decisions.
Career decisions become so much easier because you’ll be able to say is that aligned to me Is that aligned to the mission that I’m on? Does it fulfill my purpose or is it just shiny object syndrome? You know like a job that looks great on paper, But six months and you’re feeling the same things you always have, and you just wonder whether you’ve made another mistake.
So when you know your career purpose, you have a sense of clarity.
If you think about your career as this kind of kick-ass road Trip that you’re on your career purpose is your GPS. You know You’re, not gon na sit out on a huge adventure in this huge road trip without having some kind of destination in mind, But that’s what we do all the time with our careers, And we all know that annoying person who’S always known What they wanted to do since they were just a little kid, and some people get really lucky and they stumble across Their career purpose along the way right.
They try some things out and they kind of accidentally fall into it and that’s really cool too, But for the majority of us, that’s not the case.
In fact, according to Gallup, only 15 percent of people are engaged in their work, Which means that they have some sort of emotional attachment to the job or the company.
So basically they care about what they’re.
Doing.
No wonder we have so many people down there counting down the days till Friday, But don’t, you think, is a little bit strange.
How most of us have kind of just come to accept Hating what we do for 40 hours a week like you, ‘ll spend a third of your waking hours at work.
You should want them to count.
So one of the reasons I started Badass Careers is because I think it’s high time we stopped just Surviving during the weeks waiting for the weekends to finally start living and how we’re going to find that sense of purpose that sense of happiness.
Well, research shows that people find meaning when they can see a clear connection between the things they highly value and what they spend time Doing. If you think about it as an iceberg at the tip of the iceberg above the sea, You’ve got what you do and how you do it right.
So what you do could be your job title.
Where you work a salary.
You can’t dispute.
It its a fact how you do it as the way you go about it So the way you have to behave at work, the kind of skills you use at work and so on and then underneath the surface You’ve got you.
Why and when people can articulate the link between what they do, how they do it, and why they do it.
Studies show that they’re both happier in work and life and that they even live longer.
So your, why or your purpose is really tapping into that stuff below the surface.
As I say that could be Personality values, it could be your natural strengths and talents.
It could be external influences that shape you. It could be your life experiences.
All of these things will come together to help you find yourself.
Why? So, if you want to find your, why and you’re really excited by this, and you’re ready to do the work and you’re wondering.
Where Do I get started? I’m gon na.
Take you through the five-step framework That’s gon na help.
You figure it all out because all the answers you need are actually right inside of you right now, So truth bomb You don’t actually have to go backpacking for a year or go to a silent yoga retreat in Bali.
To find your purpose, I mean to do that if you want, but don’t, do it just to find your purpose, I mean just go on a holiday or something, but all the answers you need are right in here.
So before you book a one-way ticket to Patagonia, I just want you to do a little bit of reflection and a little bit of listening to yourself, because the way society works is that it kind of pushes us along this pathway.
And There are lots of things that we have to sort of forget about along the way or desires that we push down.
But basically, there’s this stuff that we’ve always known about ourselves. That we may not have listened to for quite a long time.
So let’s jump into one of my favorite models for asking yourselves this, sometimes quite profound and even Uncomfortable questions.
It’s called the Ikigai framework.
No, I didn’t make up the Ikigai framework.
It is actually a Japanese concept, which means the reason for being because they found that when they were looking at these small villages in Japan, where they have populations of people who are living for the longest on earth, and they try to figure out What is making these People stay so happy and so healthy and live for so long.
They found that these people had an Ikigai, So you might want to call it your calling your life’s mission, your raison d,’e tre.
It’s.
Basically, the reason for getting out of bed in the morning – and the point is that you will start behaving and acting and living in a way that’s aligned to this mission and it will Infuse every single day with just a little bit more Meaning.
So your Ikigai, or your purpose or your big, why it lies at the intersection Of four components: what you’re good at, what you love, What the world needs, and what you can be paid for, and I’ve been a bit of a surprise for You I have actually built an entire Mini course, around figuring out your Ikigai and I’m currently giving it away for free, So click the link down in the description Below.
If you want to sign up for that and do some really deep work on this. But before you jump away, Let me take you through the five steps that you’re, going to need to follow, to Really find your Ikigai.
Why So step? One is figuring out what you’re, really good at.
So the first quadrant of the Ikigai framework is all about your Strengths, your skills, and what you have to offer the world and as the world of workers transforming and we move towards careers that look more like portfolios and’s more project-based and based On gigs and sort of moving away from those long term, Employment contracts – or you know, being in the same company for thirty years as you move away from all of that, We’re very much moving towards self-managed careers.
So it’s so so critical that you understand your unique strengths.
What sets you apart and how to leverage that so some of the deeper questions that you might ask yourself in this area are things like Everybody has an unfair advantage.
The things that seem to come naturally to them without much coaching or studying.
What do you tend to understand more quickly than most people? What do you find fun that other people might find difficult or boring? What makes you you, what makes you weird, and, by the way being weird, is a good Step.
2 is knowing what makes you come alive.
Okay, your passions, So this quadrant of the Ikigai framework is all about the things that really light you up.
Understanding Your passion is a really important piece of the puzzle because it gives us clues as to what energizes you as a person. So we can either work towards integrating those exact things into a career or a side hustle, or we can use them to kind of Predict the types of activities that you would naturally find really enjoyable.
Some of the deeper questions You might ask yourself in this area.
Are things like what content do you find yourself consuming books, Podcasts Netflix shows YouTube videos.
Is there a theme? Is there something you love learning about? What kind of articles can you not resist clicking on? Think of recent times, when you are so immersed while working on something you achieved a state of Flow, you felt energized and time seemed to fly by without you even noticing, and unfortunately Sleeping and binging Netflix Don’t count here, Sorry guys.
So what were you doing when you were in that state of flow Step? Three is all about getting crystal clear on what matters to you most: Okay, So your values.
So this is the third quadrant of the Ikigai framework and it goes pretty deep.
You really peel away the layers here to understand your core values.
Values are just so important to you that they guide your decision making in your Behaviour, whether you know about it or not, and if you find yourself in a work situation where you’re not fully living your values, you’re going to feel a Constant Sort of niggle right, like an almost like an internal nagging, that something’s not quite right.
You may not be able to put your finger on it, But you just know in your gut that something’s not quite working for you.
For example, if you really value Family time, like that’s, your number one – That is your number one source of joy and pleasure and fulfillment and life – and you’re working in a job that takes you away Seventy hours a week with loads of travel. You’re gon na, probably feel an internal sense of conflict and stress, and if you really don’t value competition, like you, You’re, just not a competitive person at all.
You don’t care who wins when you play board games or you don’t have those big family fights when you lose at monopoly and then you go and work in a really Competitive sales environment.
Are you really going to be satisfied with your job? Long term, So in the free course that I’m giving you guys over the next few months, It’s called to find my why you’ll actually do a value sorting exercise To figure out what your top five core values are, and you’Ll also answer some deep questions: kind of like the following: What could you really fire up? What injustice Infuriates you Imagine, you’re hosting a dinner for your role models and you could invite anyone you want Dead or Alive.
Who would you invite and why right one characteristic for each of them? What is it about their life and accomplishments that inspire you? What underlying traits or values draw you in Step? Four is Understanding what you can be paid for.
Show me the money, I mean let’s be honest.
If you’re not getting paid in your career, It’s either an internship or a volunteer role, and if you’re not getting paid for your side, hustle, or your business, Then it’s just an expensive hobby.
So it’s really really important, Of course, because life, you know, we’ve all got expenses bills.
You know, responsibilities, a certain lifestyle We want to maintain.
So in this step of the free course, It’s very much around matching what you have to offer the world with what the world needs.
Okay, so the demand, so what kind of Problems you can solve and who is willing to pay you to solve those problems? So in this week of the find my, why course you do loads of research? You do a healthy dose of LinkedIn stalking. You find cool people doing cool things, you get loads of Inspiration, and it just opens your eyes to the possibilities that are out there.
When it comes to things you can actually be paid to do.
Step 5 is around bringing it all together.
So, by the end of the find my, why course You’re actually going to be able to articulate yours.
Why and you’ll have captured it into a really tidy Powerful sentence.
So with my guidance and the videos and the workbooks, I provide there are some really really incredible.
Why’s that have emerged? I’ll give you an example.
One of my clients has gone through, so she’s an aspiring, UX designer, and she says Me.
Why is to use my passion for empathetic user experience, design and my skills and technology to help Not for profits and charities to create great Websites and apps that keep the users coming back, and this is exactly why what I came up with when I decided To found Badass Careers, This is from going through this framework.
On my own, My, why is to leverage my strengths and career development, HR, and psychology to help young professionals to find their purpose Brand themselves, and get the job, so they can build the dream career and do work that energizes them. So, as you can see It,’s super powerful.
Once you find your why and then you’re able to job, hunt and filter opportunities Really based on this kind of internal compass that you now have and when you find that work where you’re, actually aligned to yours.
Why believe me? There’s, no more feeling like you, ‘re wasting time Or you’re not living up to your potential and there’s definitely no more job-hopping from one thing to the next.
Only to realize that you’re still unhappy after that initial thrill of a new salary wears off and let’s be honest.
No one said that it would be quick, easy require a little effort.
It’s the opposite of that.
It takes a lot of work on yourself, a lot of tapping into your intuition, a lot of Reflection, a lot of time to process things, and hey.
It may not give you all the answers that you’re looking for But believe me once you find you.
Why you’ll feel a hick of the way along the journey.
So if you’re the kind of person that actually gives us shizz about your career, I definitely recommend putting in the time to find your purpose, Because who doesn’t want to find happiness and every day.
