Wolf-like dogs: Looking like wild wolves!

If you think all dogs are like wolves, you are probably right. But if you think all wolves are doglike, you are almost certainly wrong.
The wolf variation of the “dog-like wolf” meme says that all wolves are social animals. If you hang out with wolves, you will learn that they are social animals.
The opposite meme says that all dogs (or all domesticated animals, or all mammals) are pack animals. If you hang out with dogs, you will learn that they are pack animals.

A dog like a wolf? A dog that, by instinct, is like the great gray wolf? Dogs are like wolves, you say?
Your question makes no sense.
Dogs and wolves look different. They are different in anatomy, physiology, behavior, and evolution. We should have expected them to have developed differently.
But they haven’t. The similarity is striking, and at first, scientists thought it was a mystery. How could they have evolved so similarly?
In 1858, Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, in which he explained how animals develop. It was a brilliant book, and one of the most influential ever. It explained many things about evolution, including how dogs and wolves have diverged.
In Darwin’s view, organisms adapt gradually and invisibly, so it’s impossible for an observer to see them change. But you can observe the anatomy of fossils, and over time you can see animals develop from earlier forms. From those observations, Darwin built a theory, called natural selection, that he summarized in his title: “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life.” He predicted that the anatomy of dogs and wolves would be similar.

Some years ago, after I read a book about wolves, I decided I wanted one. I looked at breeders and at wolf sanctuaries. But at no point did anyone suggest a canine cross. The wolf seemed like a good dog, and across would be as good, but the dog seemed more readily available.
Now, it doesn’t seem right to demand that breeders keep dogs as close to the breed as possible. But at this removal, with the hobby of breeding dogs having become such a profession, it seems especially strange.
I don’t know if any dog breeders are wolves or if they just breed dogs that look like wolves. If they did breed wolves, that would be a problem. If they breed dogs that look like wolves, that’s a different story.
But these are metaphorical dogs. They don’t exist.

If they did exist, they wouldn’t be dogs, and none of them would be good.
Dogs spend most of their time chasing squirrels. Dogs are good at chasing squirrels, but wolves are even better. So cross two wolves, and you get a canine chaser of squirrels with wolfish agility and intelligence.
Would a dog do what a wolf does?
Probably. But then it wouldn’t be a dog, and it wouldn’t be good.

Dogs eat other animals, and wolves eat dogs. But there’s no obvious reason why wolves should be any more wolfish than dogs. If a dog and a wolf both want to eat mice and both have room to run, they’ll chase the mice around until they either get tired or get caught.

As a child, I dreamed of a lab where dogs could run around barking all day and scientists could study them.
This dream was never realized, but it was replaced with another dream: of getting a dog.
I got a dog when I was in college, and to my surprise, it turned out to be a really mean dog. It needed a lot of exercise, and I wasn’t always able to give it to that exercise. I would come home from class, and my dog would be sitting there at the door, looking at me but unenthusiastic. I’d try to hurry her off to bed, and she would bark at me and nick me with her sharp teeth.
Eventually, however, I grew to love my dog and came to depend on her. But I also came to realize that she was no substitute for a good lab.

Luckily, I found one.

A scientist named Susan Hutchinson has a research laboratory for dog lovers. She gives dogs to people from all over the United States. The dogs have jobs and hobbies: one dog, for example, is a police dog, and another one is a therapy dog. A couple of years ago, I got one of the dogs, and I still can’t believe how lucky I was.
Susan’s lab is also a school for dog lovers, a school for scientists, and a school for animal lovers. Last year, for instance, she taught a class on dog behavior. Her students learned about the role of smell in dog communication; they learned which dogs make good watchdogs and which dogs make good lapdogs. They learned that you can train a dog to sit, stay, lie down, roll over, heel, etc., and that dogs are eager to…
