Animal Wellness Magazine – Top secrets, pet food manufacturers don’t want to know.

commercial pet-food companies tend to hide the truth about their products. Savvies have learned the basics about eating a nutritious diet and how good it is for your pet. But there are still other matters of interest about the commercial pet food industry which you are possibly unaware of. How does a Pet food company make the same mistake of not telling its consumers? Some are something you might have already learned by doing your homework… but some might not. Sometimes the secret you secretly reveal may be the thing that influences your food quality without causing anything.secret dog food

Are these BETTER ways to feed your dogs?

There are a lot of places online where you can read about how to feed your dog fancy, expensive and complicated diets. The pros recommend these diets because they’re supposedly healthier (supposedly being the crucial word).
The problem with these diets is that they are costly. Many people can’t afford them, particularly since most dogs don’t need fancy diets.
That’s why dog food companies exist. They sell cheaper, nutritionally equivalent dog food, and they make their money by selling extra stuff, from vitamins to shampoos to leashes.
And the dogs love it. Because dogs like the food. They love food. They love treats, and when they get treats, they’re happy. They love toys and playing with toys, and with other dogs, and with their owners.
So, no: feeding your dog a fancy diet isn’t better. It’s more expensive, and it puts more pressure on you (and your dog) to give your dog what it wants.
The other bad thing about feeding your dog a fancy diet is that it can seriously affect your dog’s health. Dogs, unlike humans, aren’t like computers. They have their bodies, and they like them, and they want to keep them healthy. If dog food companies succeed in persuading you that your dog’s health depends on you feeding it various kinds of fancy diet, then they won’t make much money selling dog food, and they won’t make much money selling vitamins, shampoos, leashes, and other accessories.
So feeding your dog a fancy diet can be bad for your dog, and it’s bad for your dog because it’s bad for you.

The pet food “life stage and lifestyle shuffle” is more about dollars.

We don’t spend our lives dreaming about dog treats. Really, we don’t. We get so involved in the business of making dog treats that we forget all about them.
Dog food makes strange demands upon us. We have to test every ingredient. We have to make sure every dog likes it. We have to make every batch as consistent as possible. We have to design packaging to appeal to dogs. And we have to keep all of this a secret.
Dog food companies go to great lengths to keep the recipes secret. But anyone who has had a dog will understand that once they taste a new treat, they go nuts for it.
When we offer a new treat to a dog, we almost never know what they will like. Sometimes it turns out they hate everything about the treat except the ingredients.
Some dogs love our treats so much they beg for them. Others, despite our best efforts, will refuse to touch them.

A few years ago, my master’s at dogfood2u.com began experimenting with liquid dog food. The experiments didn’t go well. The liquid dog food tasted terrible, and dogs didn’t want to eat it.
A few weeks into the experiment, the dog food company’s founder, Chris Gimmel, emailed me. “I just wanted to tell you that this liquid dog food is the best thing I’ve ever eaten,” he told me.
“It is, isn’t it?” I replied.
“It is,” he said.
“You should try it,” I said. “It beats regular dog food.”
“I will,” he said.
But I didn’t. A few days after that, Chris wrote again. “I tried the liquid dog food,” he said. “It’s great.”

Dog Food Secrets

“Don’t be too nice to your dog,” they say. But is this really true?
What does “nice” mean? Does it mean good, or kind, or friendly, or something else? To dogs, “nice” means food.
Dogs are smart. They can tell when their owners are happy, and they know when their owners get mad at them.
They can tell when their owners are in a good mood and when they are in a bad one. They can tell when their owners want them to do something and when they don’t.
They can sense their owner’s anger, and they know how to use that anger to get what they want.
Dogs know us better than we know ourselves.
They are also predators. They hunt small prey and big prey. They fight with other canines. They kill for food.
If we want to get along well with dogs, it helps to understand these characteristics.
Dogs are predators, and predators have certain expectations.
A dog expects food.
A dog expects affection.
A dog expects care.
A dog expects respect.
A dog expects a clean place to sleep and a dry place to sit down.
A dog expects to be able to safely run and jump and play and sniff and dig.
A dog expects to be able to eat its own food off the floor.
A dog expects to be able to eat its own food off the table.
A dog expects to be able to eat its own food out of the garbage can.
A dog expects to be able to eat its own food out of a trashcan.

Fruits are good for us. But apples, bananas are off-limits for dogs, right?
Wrong.
The ASPCA recommends apples, and bananas for pets, as long as they’re properly cooked and washed.
So go ahead and give Fido some apple slices, grapes, or bananas (or strawberries, or peaches). Just make sure they’re cooked and washed, and be sure to keep a close eye on him when you give him any food.
If you give Fido something that’s raw, he might choke on it, or it might get stuck in his intestines, and he could end up needing surgery.
