The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is a large canine found in South America. It is the largest canine in South America. It weighs 20–30 kilograms (43–66 lb) and is about 90 cm at the withers. His long thin legs and dense reddish coat give his distinctive beauty. It communicates primarily by fragrance marking, but also gives a loud call known as “roar raging”. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as near endangered though it is listed as.

The maned wolf is a canid native to South America. It is distinguished from foxes by its coat, which is mottled gray with a dark stripe down the middle, and a bushy tail. The maned wolf’s weight ranges from 30 to 50 kilograms (66 to 110 lb), and it reaches 1.2–1.5 meters (3.9–4.9 ft) in length.

The maned wolf is a solitary predator, with territories covering 2 to 5 square kilometers (0.75–2.0 sq mi). It hunts at night, predominantly on small mammals, but occasionally on birds and reptiles.[1]
The Maned Wolf is critically endangered. The IUCN classifies the species as Critically Endangered.[2] It is considered to be very close to extinction and is threatened by the destruction of its habitat due to agriculture and the expansion of human settlements in South America.[3]

The species was feared to be extinct until 1995 when an expedition led by Eduardo Pinto discovered a small population in north-eastern Brazil. This population grew to an estimated 500 animals by 2002,[4] before being reduced to 100 individuals in 2011[5]. In 2012, the Brazilian government decided to declare the maned wolf a protected species.

This essay is about maned wolves. Since they are so rare, most people have never heard about them. But they deserve to be heard. They are beautiful animals with an interesting history.
A hundred years ago, zoologists considered maned wolves to be extinct. Then in 1906, one was caught in Brazil, and in 1908 another one was found. By 1921, 14 maned wolves had been found. They were rediscovered again in 1937. Since then, they have been found every few years.
